In the recent past, many small and medium size businesses were reluctant to do so, mostly due to security concerns. This change in attitude of both the end users and the information technology or IT managers has taken place due to the enormous benefits bestowed upon them by the cloud computing technology.
For the individual, total control over their computing comes at a hefty price. Software must be installed and configured, then updated with each new release. The computational infrastructure of operating systems and low level utilities must be maintained. Every update to the operating system sets off a cascade of subsequent revisions to other programs. Outsourcing computation to an Internet service provider eliminates nearly all these concerns. Cloud computing also offers end users advantages in terms of mobility and collaboration.
Cloud hosting service providers offer services at various layers of the software stack. At the lower layers, Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS providers, such as Amazon, allow their customers to have access to the entire virtual machines or VMs hosted by the providers. A customer, and user of the system, is responsible for providing the entire software stack running inside a virtual machine or VM. At higher layers, Software as a Service or SaaS systems, such as Google Apps, offer complete online applications than can be directly executed by their users.
For most cloud computing applications, the entire user interface resides inside a single window in a Web browser, such as, internet explorer, mozilla firefox web browser, or any other browser program. For those deploying their software out in the cloud, scalability is a major advantage. The need to marshal resources in such a way that a software or an application program (for eg., QuickBooks, Peachtree, ACT! CRM, etc.) continues running smoothly even as the number of users grows is fully satisfied by hosting applications on cloud. It's not just that cloud servers responds to hundreds or thousands of re- quests per second; the cloud hosting system also coordinates information coming from multiple sources, not all of which are under the control of the same business organization. The pattern of cloud based communication is many to many, with each server talking to multiple clients and each client invoking programs on multiple servers.
